CHARITY FISHING COMPETITION
NORTH ISLAND & SOUTH ISLAND
What started as a one-off memorial event in 2020 for New Zealand’s iconic TV builder, has grown to become an annual charity fishing competition that raises money to help kids across New Zealand via the Kiwi Kids Charity. In true Cocksy style, the day involves humorous fishing antics and totally sideways rules.

The Gist Of The Comp
The Cocksy Classic is NOT your run of the mill serious fishing competition, although that doesn’t dial down the competitiveness, in fact, it seems to set it alight! It’s become famous in Coromandel for tradie vs tradie, neighbour vs neighbour and mates who spend months planning how they’re going to out-do each other in chasing the coveted “golden fleece” award. Protests against your teammates or competitors are not only welcome, but they are also encouraged, as is bribing the judges. The day is all about getting on and under the water, laughter, connecting and having loads of fun, all in the spirit of spending time together and doing good in the process – it’s the fishing competition with a difference, to make a difference.
Species & Method
Species are specific to each competition’s location with “wild card” species announced the night prior to each comp. Some will be judged by length and some by weight, others are completely random. Participants can fish from land, on or under sea by rod, reel, or spear. Strictly NO cray pots, long lines or nets allowed. Catch and release is allowed as long as it is measured on the official mat provided. Minimum sizes are set above the standard Fisheries NZ limits in the encouragement of sustainable fishing practices.
The Champion
With an event like this, awards couldn’t possibly follow the norm! Participants should prepare themselves for fun and bring their sense of humour. In the spirit of the yellow jersey concept, it is the highly coveted “Golden Fleece” that brings out the most competitive antics during the event. The Golden Fleece isn’t a prize, it’s an award, and brings a year’s worth of bragging rights which is generally awarded to the team or person who catch with best Kingfish. However, that can and is most often superseded by an act of outstanding sportsmanship, a hero story, something extraordinary, a creative entry or just because the judge says so.
The Prizes
Although prizes are part of this event, they should not be the reason you attend. We take no shame in making it loud and clear that participation in this event is NOT about “what’s in it for you”, it’s about what we can raise for the kids. That said, the competition is generously supported by many wonderful sponsors who donate incredible prizes, raffles, and auction items.

SUPPORTING KIWI KIDS!
All proceeds from this event go towards supporting The Kiwi Kids Charity!
The Kiwi Kids Charity brings hope, help, and happiness to Kiwi Kids, that prides itself on helping children, schools, and families whose unique needs often aren’t eligible for funding or support through other charities or organisations.
The Charity is not your everyday charity, it’s like a huge, extended family made up mostly of volunteers who pledge their time, talents, tools, and toys to make a tangible difference, at a grassroots level. No matter whether it’s custom-built mobility support, access to learning tools, working bees, medical equipment, speech lessons, sports equipment, or just basic supplies, they get super creative and use their networks to stretch the dollars.
SPECIAL THANKS TO
We cannot express enough how grateful we are to have snagged these incredible Platinum event sponsors - Dayle ITM for Tairua, and a collective of 7 top of the South ITM stores for D'Urville Island. Without their generosity, these events would not be possible. We can proudly say, that 100% of their sponsorship contribution goes directly to helping Kiwi Kids.
Thank you for your enthusiasm and unwavering support because without you, our fishing comp just wouldn't be reel-y fun!
